Materials needed for THE COZY SHEPHERD
- U.S. 13, 16 inch circular needles
- U.S. 13 straight needles
- Super bulky weight yarn (approx. 106 yards) Pictured Yarn: Lion Brand Wool Ease Quick and Thick
- 1 ½ inch wood button
- Tapestry Needle
- Scrap cardboard
- Needle and Thread
Gauge: 2.5 stitches = 1 inch
Abbreviations:
- K = Knit
- P = Purl
- K2tog = Knit two together
PATTERN
With the U.S. 13 circular needles cast on the number of stitches for the size hat you are making as follows -
- Toddler - 36 stitches
- Child - 38 stitches (pictured)
- Teen/Small Adult - 40 stitches
- Adult - 42 stitches
- Large Adult - 44 stitches.
Place marker and join to begin working in the round being careful not to twist the stitches.
K1, P1 continuously in the round until work measures
- 9 inches (Toddler/Child)
- 9 1/2 inches (Teen/Adult)
K2tog all around once.
Break yarn and weave through remaining stitches, pull tight. Weave in ends.
Side Ties: Using the U.S. 13 straight needles pick up 3 stitches from the base (cast on edge) of the hat where the ear would be. Knit back and forth until tie measures
15 inches( Toddler/Child)
17 inches (Teen/Adult)
Bind off stitches as if to knit. Weave in ends. Repeat this on the other side of the hat where the other ear would be.
Pom-pom: Using extra yarn make a 3 1/2 inch pom-pom. When pom-pom is completed insert the yarn tails into the top of the hat using the tapestry needle and double knot the tails on the inside of the hat. Weave in ends.
How to make a pom-pom:
Lay a sheet of cardboard onto a table and draw two circles 3 1/2 inches in diameter. Cut out the circles with scissors. Draw two smaller circles 1 3/4” diameter in the center of each cut-out circle, making sure that the circles are the same size. Cut a slit in each circle and then cut out the center circles from both forms.
Place the two cardboard forms against each other, and wrap yarn over and through the doubled form. Continue wrapping yarn over and through the cardboard until it is thick.
Hold the form in one hand, and insert a pair of scissors into the form using the other hand. The scissors should be pushed in between the two cardboard pieces. Cut around the perimeter of the cardboard pieces, effectively separating the wrapped yarn. Keep the cardboard intact and in place.
Cut 2 separate pieces of yarn to measure 20 inches long, and wrap the pieces of yarn around the cut perimeter. Pull the ends of the yarn together tightly, and knot it in place.
Slide the two cardboard forms off of the newly created pom-pom, and trim off any long pieces of yarn.
Button: Using needle and thread sew a 1 ½ inch button onto the brim of hat. I like to sew mine slightly off center – but you can place it however you like. Enjoy!_______________________________________________
